Welcome to The Faculty for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

The Faculty (formerly the Learning Disability Special Interest Group) is part of the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) of the British Psychological Society (BPS). We are a national group with members throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Faculty currently has over 400 members.

Two Main Strategic Roles

Influencing and responding to issues that impact on psychology as a whole, and ensuring that people with learning disabilities benefit from these agendas. This will include addressing the DCP strategic objectives.

Ensuring that national and local developments take account of the psychological needs of people with learning disabilities, and that clinical psychologists are in a position to influence services. We achieve some of this by responding to various consultations and preparing guidance on best practice.

The Faculty for Learning Disabilities provides a forum for Clinical Psychologists with an interest in work with people with learning disabilities.

Our aims are to...

Foster effective psychological services and practices for people with learning disabilities and their families or carers, which respect their rights, enhance their status and promote a positive image.

Use and disseminate psychological information, knowledge and skills to promote good practice at all levels, with users, carers, providers and commissioners.

Act as a focal point for consultation on all matters, which relate to users' psychological well being for the Society, Division and all relevant organisations.

Encourage and promote the professional work and development of clinical psychologists within this field.

Promote awareness of current research, issues within the field and models of clinical practice at all levels of service provision, as well as within the profession, through conferences accessible to psychologists and others of all levels of experience.

What We Do:

The Faculty is involved in a range of activities. These include:

  • Organising conferences and training events
  • Producing briefing papers and policy documents
  • Providing feedback on policy documents that have been issued for consultation by the Department of Health and other organisations
  • Supporting regional groups of clinical psychologists who work with people with learning disabilities
  • Liaising with other agencies and professional groups
  • Producing a quarterly Newsletter for our members

Learning Disabilities Professional Senate:

The Learning Disabilities Professional Senate was set up in 2010 as an alliance of the Professional Bodies that provide assessment, treatment and support to people who have learning disabilities.  Its aim is to support the development of excellent health and social care services in the United Kingdom for people who have learning disabilities. It brings together professional leaders from across the UK to provide a vehicle for cross-professional collaboration, strategic advice and innovation to support commissioners.  The Senate is providing advice to a range of policy-making and strategic bodies including the Department of Health, NHS England, Commissioners, Care Quality Commission and the Learning Disabilities Programme Board.  We have successfully influenced a number of strategic developments.

Dr Alick Bush, Policy Lead of the DCP ID Faculty, is Chair of the LD Professional Senate until December 2014, when Dr Karen Dodd, chair of the DCP ID Faculty will take over as co-Chair with Dr Della Money (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).  The Chair of the Senate is a full member of the Learning Disabilities Programme Board which is chaired by the Minister of State for Care and Support (currently Norman Lamb).

How We Are Organised:

A National Committee is elected by the membership that manages the activities of the Faculty. The Committee usually consists of a Chair, Chair Elect, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Conference Organiser, Newsletter Editor and a number of General Members who are co-opted onto the Committee. Elections take place at the Committee's AGM. The Committee meets four times a year.

All members receive the Newsletter and are entitled to discounted rates at the popular annual 'Advancing Practice' (formerly 'Beyond the Basics') conference and at all other conferences and events organised by the Faculty throughout the year.

Membership Discussion list

The list is an efficient way of informing members about new developments and it is useful for distributing documents. It also allows members to ask each other questions and to discuss issues with each other.

Please see below for some of the topics included in recent e-mail exchanges:

  • A discussion of the ways in which we can respond to police or court requests for information, including exploration of ethics and some useful advice on several aspects of these issues.
  • Evaluating outcomes of psychological intervention, including advice on methods of addressing outcomes.
  • A discussion about service ethics committees.
